Ruth (Thomas) Cordell age 89 years and 18 days, passed away Saturday, January 14, 2017, at her home in Stearns, Kentucky.
She was born at Swain, Kentucky, on December 27, 1927, the daughter of the late Charles Everett and Mattie (Hill) Thomas.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 71 years, William Bradley “DieHard” Cordell, a son, William Bradley Cordell, Jr., two brothers: Howard Thomas and Charles E. Thomas, Jr., four sisters: Reba Little, Valda Douglas, Mabra Cox and Alma Thomas, a granddaughter: Renee’ Tribell a son-in-law, Maurice Tribell and daughter-in-law, Kandi Campbell Cordell.
Surviving family include a son, Tony Cordell of Pine Knot, two daughters: Ruth Diane Cordell-Tribell of Middlesboro, and Lisa Ann Huddleston (husband Eddie) of Stearns, two sisters: Glenna Ball of Somerset and “Marjorie” Jane Gilreath of Somerset, six grandchildren: Alisha Cordell, Amity Cordell, Thomas Young, Dusty Cordell, Rachel Tribell Denny, and Roxanne Tribill Davis, nine great-grandchildren: Kemily West, Joshua Denny, Alexia Denny, Annabelle Davis, RayWilliam Hughes, Jacob Hughes, Aaron Hughes, Aaliyah Hughes, Kason Young.
Ruth and DieHard ran their own trucking company (Cordell Trucking, Inc.) for 38 years. She also owned and operated The Village Center at Revelo (where Papa’s Pizza is now). When she was young, she worked with her parents at the Greyhound Bus Station at Pine Knot. Her father opened one of the first hardware stores (old Williams Hardware store) in Whitley City where she started keeping the books at the age of 14. She was a founding member of the Davis Hill Church of God. She taught Sunday School for many years.
She has family members scattered across the United States and been blessed with the ability to share memories and pictures with everyone on Facebook.
